Temporomandibular Joint Arthritis
before and after
Falling of chin when yawning
It was two years ago when I realised that the joint to my right ear was like a loose screw with a quack sound. When eating, my mouth is slightly open or when chewing with my mouth closed, the sound is not very loud. However, when I take relatively big chunks or yawn with my mouth open or closed, there is a quack sound.
Although it did not hurt, the quacking sound still made me extremely worried and afraid that my chin will drop when I yawn. Therefore, I use my hand to press my chin when I yawn for me to dare open my mouth.
This situation made me feel not at ease so I went to the doctors. The doctor suspected that it was temporomandibular arthritis and arranged an x-ray examination. The result showed that there was no problem with my joint, so I decided to wear dental wax made braces first. The braces really exerted their effect. The headache and stiff shoulders that I had continuously been having improved but the quacking sound did not improve. As there were no other methods, so apart from mealtime, I wore the braces for almost two years.
It was late June in 2000, when I accepted the dentist's recommendation to start using Patakara. Just at that time, my braces broke and I heard that Patakara exercise helps temporomandibular arthritis. Therefore, I went to see Dr. Akihiro to consult with him. Dr. Akihiro said that although there is no problem with my temporomandibular, there is a sound because the facial expression muscles around my mouth and face are not balanced. As long as I train those muscles, the sound will gradually become smaller.
Chin and neck's wrinkles became thin
The first time when I did Patakara exercise, I could not close my mouth at all as my strength was too weak. Therefore, I pulled the handle forward to help close my mouth. After doing this for 3-4 days, I could rely on my lip strength to close my mouth. At the same time, I also no longer felt that my teeth hurt. I normally do the Patakara exercise before mealtime and sleep time for 2 minutes each. I do the Patakara exercise for about 3-4 times a day. About after 2 weeks of doing this, I was unexpectedly happy about the effect. The longitudinal wrinkles on my lips actually became less obvious at the bottom of my nose, and even my chin and neck lines became tighter. Up to the third week, the quacking sound minimised. Whether it was during mealtime or yawning time, I also did not feel the noise that much and I could open my mouth freely to eat or yawn.
Although the quacking sound has not completely disappeared, I am extremely confident that as long as I continue to do Patakara exercise that one day it will disappear. The wrinkles around my chin and mouth were practically gone and my skin also became full of elasticity. Patakara exercise not only helps your health but it also helps your beauty. I will definitely continue to do Patakara exercise.
Dr. Akihiro's recommendations
The reason for the cause of temporomandibular arthritis may not necessarily be biting problems. There is no problem with biting but there are many cases of temporomandibular arthritis symptoms. These types of situations may be due to problems with the balancing of facial expression muscles. At Tokyo Dental University, we gave patients and users of braces who were still unable to improve their temporomandibular arthritis to do Patakara exercise. The result was that they improved. Ms. Kawaguchi is also a sufferer of this condition, so I had the confidence that I could treat her from the start.
Ms. Kawagutchi recently informed me of her situation and said [I also no longer feel that I have bad breath now and my teeth no longer bleed. What has surprised me most recently was that my many years of nasal blockage, runny nose, problem sleeping due to dry tongue, and other nasal symptoms also improved. My nose has now become more unimpeded and I can also sleep very well. After having started doing Patakara exercise, I have never gone to otorhinolarynology again.
